Association software for UK charities and nonprofits

Association software

Are you an association looking for association software options? This post sets out a list of software that is specifically designed for the needs of associations.

We clarify the common needs of associations and then recommend options depending on your size.

The software needs of associations

Most associations need software that can meet the following requirements.

  • Publish your membership offering on a mobile-friendly website
  • Allow people to join and pay directly online
  • Allow members to manage their account online
  • Provide member-only web content such as resources or events
  • Provide a public or private directory of members
  • Manage both individual and organisation memberships
  • Promote and manage events
  • Take payments for membership fees and donations
  • Tools to allow professional networking
  • Provision of professional accreditation services

Pricing, complexity and size

Larger associations will need more flexibility to customise the software and will expect to pay a higher price. Smaller associations will want to keep things as simple as possible and minimise costs.

We have grouped the options below into two categories: solutions for small to medium associations and solutions for medium to large associations.

Association software for small to medium organisations

White Fuse is an integrated website, fundraising and membership platform built specifically for UK charities, societies and associations. The platform looks after the full member experience from joining online to managing their membership and accessing restricted content and resources. A number of features are included to make data protection and compliance easier for small organisations.

Comprehensive membership management tool based in the US with website builder, event management and member portal capabilities. A distinctive feature is their self-service approach that will appeal to cash-strapped organisations with the in-house tech skills to design and set things up.

As is obvious from the focus on ‘chapters’, StarChapter is association management software designed for the US market. However, its features may still be of interest to UK associations, especially those with sub-groups of some sort across the UK or further afield.

YourMembership is an all-in-one association management system that allows associations to manage their contact database and website through the same system. Event management and email communications are also managed through the same platform. One standout feature of the YourMembership platform is their integrated online social community feature that allows association members to connect with each other directly.

Association software for medium to large organisations

A full end-to-end solution for larger organisations. Also offers a range of fundraising and online community solutions for association and membership websites in the UK and internationally.

Silverbear is a membership database system designed for large professional membership associations in the UK like the Institute of Directors. They offer a comprehensive customised offering based on Microsoft Dynamics. Their solution typically includes Direct Debit support, integration with HMRC Gift Aid system and a membership portal for members to manage their own profile, book events and access financial information.

ThankQ does not offer a fully integrated membership package but it’s CRM software does support many stages of the member lifecycle, especially if the ‘web widgets’ are used to build an interactive membership website.

ThankQ is designed for a wide range of membership organisations including professional bodies, trade associations, unions, charities and clubs.

MemberNova is another all-in-one system that includes tools for website, communication and member networking. One distinctive feature is their mobile app which they claim makes it easier for members to use the built-in community engagement tools.

The MemberNova website editor features a page-by-page drag-and-drop editor. This gives a large amount of page by page flexibility.
